Uttarkhand gets patent for Bhangira (Perilla frutescens)

Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP), Selaqui, Dehradun gets US patent for specific variety of Bhangira ( Perilla) after research of 8 years. This new variety of Bhangira (Perilla) is rich in Omega-3 and has also have better productivity.

Bhangira(Perilla), contains a sufficient amount of omega-3 and omega-6, which are good for the heart. After eight years of research, scientists at CAP developed a variety named 'Caphema'. After completing all the testing by CAP on September 26, 2017, the patent application was sent to Patent and Trademark Office, USA for which 'Caphema' has now got the patent.

This variety of Bhangira(Perilla) developed in Uttarakhand is now protected and permission from Uttarakhand will be required for its use. He informed that the quantity of omega-3 in this variety is 58.8 % and that of omega-6 is 17.76 %. Common Bhangira(Perilla) contains 51.4 %, omega-3 and 18 %. Omega-6 content. From the productivity point of view, 18.8 quintals of seed per hectare will be available from Caphema, whereas you get only 9.5 quintals from normal Perilla. Similarly, the oil obtained from Caphema is also two times than that from normal Perilla.
